THE CLIENT
Gingko People were contacted by a Pharmaceutical Consulting firm to devise and implement high-level strategies that would enable them to grow effectively. There needed to be a focus on fast growth whilst maintaining incredibly high standards of client delivery.
The client works closely with life science companies, bringing fresh thinking to tackle the hardest of challenges. The team is a group of highly motivated, experienced professional consultants, who come from a diverse range of backgrounds with experience spanning all aspects of pharma, biotech and life sciences.
Since their launch, they have gained the trust of many major clients; from multinational pharmaceutical and medtech companies, to established biotechs, private equity and venture capital firms. The client’s expertise and flexible yet thorough approach has seen the business go from strength to strength.
WHAT THEY NEEDED
The client understood the importance of getting the right human resource strategies in place before they became too big. They came to us for support on devising, implementing and embedding effective HR strategies within their different teams in preparation for further fast growth.
With ambitious expansion plans, it was crucial for them to put structure and processes in place that would enable their team to do their best work without feeling overwhelmed. In an industry that is notoriously competitive, it was important to our client that they continued to build a strong, trustworthy and reliable team to drive their practice forwards in a sustainable way - finding new hires who shared their values and big ambitions was essential.
Not only did they need to hire great people, the Directors were keen to ensure that all their team members were sufficiently equipped to balance life and work and avoid burnout. This meant ensuring high levels of employee engagement as well as putting strategies in place for dealing with issues that may arise for individuals in a way that was aligned with their company culture.
WHAT WE DID
Our work, whilst often extending through to implementation, always begins with strategy. For this client, it was no different. Through taking the time to understand their goals as a business, we gained valuable insight that aided us in planning for now and the future.
We partnered with the client to optimise and streamline many aspects of their human resource function. From finding the best-suited talent to developing policies and procedures that allowed for fast growth, we have helped them to create an HR function well-aligned with their highly specific needs as a business.
When the company launched, they began with a flat management structure, where Partners directly managed staff members. To facilitate the rapid growth the client sought, we worked alongside the Partners to implement a management hierarchy that freed up the Partners’ time and expertise to give them the opportunity to focus on driving business growth.
In this streamlined hierarchy, line managers were introduced to manage teams. Throughout the process, the line managers were supported with coaching and guidance to ensure they had the tools to keep team members motivated, productive and able to balance life and work without burning out.
Having the luxury of being involved with the client since the early days of the business, we were able to put in place HR infrastructure that facilitated the development of a positive team culture, as well as allowing them to grow rapidly (and tackle the difficulties of the global pandemic) with ease.
OUR SUCCESSES
By giving us the freedom to implement procedures and systems and committing to long-term thinking, the client’s approach to human resources has enabled a solid foundation for growth both now and in the future. In just under 24 months, they have grown their team by 340%, all of whom are engaged, have aligned values, and are committed to driving the business forward as a team.
Our strategic and long-term approach has helped them to weather the storm of the 2020 pandemic, enabling them to efficiently deal with problems and ensuring each individual feels heard and remains engaged during this extended period of remote working.
Not only has our work been praised by the Directors, the team have also shown their enthusiasm for our support. It’s not always smooth sailing when bringing in new procedures for an existing team but their people embraced change and saw the value in our work from the outset.
